Air Products and TotalEnergies have penned an agreement for the supply of green hydrogen to help decarbonise the latter company’s European refineries.
TotalEnergies, which makes the Total lubricant and coolant range, previously invited tenders to supply a total of half a million tons of green hydrogen each year.
Under this new 15-year deal, Air Products will be delivering 70,000 tons of green hydrogen to TotalEnergies’ refineries each year from 2030, preventing 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
TotalEnergies has set itself the 2030 target of reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its operated gas and oil assets by 40% when compared to 2015 levels.
The CEO and chairman of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné, said about the agreement:
“This deal with Air Products, the first signed following the call for tenders launched last year, is a steppingstone towards our goal of decarbonising the hydrogen used in TotalEnergies’ refineries in Northern Europe by the end of the decade.”
He added that the company was showing its ability to lead the way in the energy transition and support the development of the fledgling green hydrogen business by entering into long-term contracts.
In addition, Pouyanné said the company was also pleased to be becoming a provider of renewable power to Air Products and contribute to meeting its own decarbonisation goals.
The companies have agreed an initial Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to buy 150 MW from a Texas solar project, with the possibility of further PPAs in the UK, France and Poland.
