Already this year, many parts of Malaysia have been heavily afflicted by monsoon floods. This includes the state of Sarawak, where multiple districts have suffered substantial impact.

Via Yayasan Petronas, the company’s social impact arm, state-funded energy oil and gas giant Petronas has shared around 8,750 care packages with the nation, 1,150 of which were assigned to Sarawak.

The packages include personal and hygiene items for daily use like fresh mineral water, blankets, towels, cutlery, diapers, sanitary pads, wet wipes, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

In a recent statement, a spokesperson for Petronas commented that the packages were passed to the Sarawak Social Welfare Department late last year for storage at dedicated department depot centres throughout the state. They said that the social welfare department would issue the care packages when required to temporary evacuation centres established across Sarawak.

Since January 12, more than 950 packages have seen distribution to various sites across Samarahan, Miri, Mukah and Bintulu. General manager for Petronas in Sarawak, Norazibah M Rabu, stated that the company remains dedicated to supporting the state’s government to lessen the burden that flood-affected communities are currently facing.

He affirmed that Petronas stands with the state at this time of crisis and urged the public to stay vigilant. The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee has warned of an expected second flooding wave because of the King Tide, which happens when the gravitational pull of the moon and sun align, delivering the highest high tides for the year.

Established in 1974, Petronas manages Malaysia’s oil and gas reserves while pursuing international investment. It also operates Petronas Lubricants, which supplies lubricant products for various sectors including engineering, manufacturing and commercial.
