Fully renewable racing fuel hailed as major milestone

The adoption of an entirely renewable fuel made by TotalEnergies for the World Endurance Championship (WEC) has been welcomed as a major landmark moment by the ACO and FIA, as well as the France-based energy major itself.

Starting with 1000 Miles of Sebring, which opens the season after a two-year, pandemic-related hiatus, the WEC became the first international motorsports series to have all its competing vehicles run on 100% renewable fuel.

TotalEnergies, which is also known for its Total industrial and food safe lubricants, makes its Excellium Racing 100 fuel without using a single drop of crude oil. Instead, it is made entirely from recycled leftover biomass that comes from the wine industry.

TotalEnergies’ Motorsport Division Vice President, Pierre-Gautier Caloni, said that the company was especially proud to be bringing its fully renewable racing fuel to actual competition, adding:

“It is a major milestone in the partnership between TotalEnergies and the Automobile Club de L’Ouest, whose strategy of promoting sustainable development is in line with our company’s ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, together with society. The FIA World Endurance Championship is thus a real laboratory for our company…”

Despite being made by a process that involves taking grape marcs and wine lees and fermenting, distilling and dehydrating them, the WEC claims Excellium Racing 100 is a genuine racing fuel that meets the specifications of vehicle manufacturers and the FIA, as well as those of the EU directive on renewable energies (RED), including a 65+% reduction in lifecycle CO2 emissions.
