The India operating arm of Castrol has partnered with the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) on a new eco-conscious project.
Together, the companies aim to construct a system that can convert used engine oil into useable base oil. The main ingredient in most oil formulations for products ranging from gear oil to grease, base oil is the building block of modern lubricants.
With a strong focus on recycling oil rather than wasting it, the partners plan to ensure the engine oil vehicles run on daily can still have a purpose after it is no longer serviceable by cars, trucks, commercial and industrial equipment. Under normal circumstances, oil that is full of contaminants and experiencing additive depletion is discarded, leading to waste and environmental pollution. However, the plans of Castrol India and HPCL seek to change this.
The project will involve waste engine oil being collected and cleaned correctly before being processed so it is fit for use as a base oil. Once the process referred to as “re-refining” is complete, the result can form the foundation for fresh lubricant products.
The key motive of the collaboration is to reduce waste and support recycling. Instead of utilising new crude oil, pre-used oil can be treated and reused, helping save natural resources and decreasing environmental damage from improper waste oil disposal.
At present, the project is still in its infancy. The two companies are now carrying out studies and tests of the concept before it can be implemented as a complete working system.
