TotalEnergies refuels LNG cruise ship

The marine fuels division of TotalEnergies has successfully completed its first LNG bunkering operation in Southern France at the Port of Marseille Fos.

The operation involved the cruise ship MSC World Europa, which was only delivered to MSC Cruises late last year. When it comes to carbon-equivalent emissions per passenger, the 333-metre-long vessel is said to be the most efficient of any large cruise ship in the world. Gas Vitality, an LNG bunker barge chartered by TotalEnergies Marine Fuels, supplied some 2,500 cubic metres of LNG to the MSC World Europa through a ship-to-ship transfer. LNG is currently the cleanest marine fuel that is available at scale.

TotalEnergies’ Senior Vice President of Lubricants and Specialties, Philippe Charleux, said the company was thrilled to support the MSC Group’s cruise division in its decarbonisation efforts:

“…and to help the Port of Marseille Fos become an LNG bunker hub for the Mediterranean region. This operation also expands our LNG bunkering capabilities to the cruise ship segment, demonstrating our ability to serve a broader range of shipping clients, as the industry strives to reduce emissions.”

He added that the company would continue collaborating with partners to deliver solutions to lower carbon emissions and ultimately eliminate them from the shipping sector.

TotalEnergies, which also makes the Total range of lubricant and grease products, is developing its capacity to supply LNG marine fuel as part of its long-term strategy to offer multiple lower carbon alternatives. This includes biomethane, other advanced biofuels and fuels based on green hydrogen.
