Energy major Shell has joined IRU, a global organisation for road transport, as a corporate member in order to enhance its engagement with the commercial transport sector in its efforts to decarbonise.
Shell is, of course, already a prominent partner to the commercial transport sector, not just as a fuel provider but also as a maker of maintenance products like the Shell Rimula commercial vehicle oil. The focus of its new IRU membership will be to work with the sector as heavy-duty fleets transition to emission-free operations as part of the energy transition. It will also engage with the sector and the IRU for other opportunities and problems that operators face, such as safety, workforce recruitment and retention, operational efficiency as well as digitalisation.
A post on the IRU’s newsfeed said about the development:
“The focus of Shell’s work with IRU’s network will be via Shell Commercial Road Transport and will be aligned with the company’s Powering Progress strategy which partners with public, private and NGO sector stakeholders on the transition to net zero emissions.”
Shell, which is over a hundred years old with over 80,000 employees spread throughout more than 70 countries, has already worked with IRU and its membership on safety training and standards for bio-LNG and LNG. At IRU events, it has been a prominent contributor; Shell representatives spoke at the Fit for 55 conferences on the European infrastructure for alternative fuels and participated in a panel session dealing with fuel prices at the recent general assembly.
