TE H2 and Austrian electricity firm VERBUND have recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tunisian Government.
This is to investigate the feasibility of a large-scale project that will produce green hydrogen and export it by pipeline to Europe.
TotalEnergies, which makes the Total coolant and lubricant range, and EREN Groupe founded TE H2 as a joint venture. The aim was to focus on looking at exceptional international sites with ample renewable resources for the production of green hydrogen, such as Australia, Latin America and North Africa.
If taken forward, the H2 Notos project in Tunisia will use electrolysers powered by wind and solar farms to produce green hydrogen from desalinated seawater.
The project would be able to export produced hydrogen through the SoutH2 Corridor, which is a future pipeline project for connecting North Africa with the European market.
TE H2’s CEO, David Corchia, said about the development:
“The signing of this MoU with the Republic of Tunisia marks the start of this ambitious project after months of work and interactions with all stakeholders. We are delighted to partner with VERBUND to support the development of such a pioneering and ambitious endeavour in such a strategic location.”
TE H2 and VERBUND will together to finance, develop, build and operate the project, which will encompass everything from generating green electricity to producing green hydrogen.
VERBUND will also be responsible for transporting hydrogen to Europe. The project aims to initially produce 200,000 tons of hydrogen each year, with this potentially scaling up to a million tons per year.
