The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), an industry thank tank, has called for more government support for new technologies to help UK manufacturers reach their net zero targets.
The MTC argues that the UK is falling behind its European competitors when it comes to investing in crucial environmental technologies, so the country may become highly reliant on importing these important technologies rather than making them domestically. City A.M. also reports seeing modelling that predicts that the UK manufacturing sector is currently on track to be emitting 5,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2050, which is when the UK aims to become a net-zero emitter.
The organisation has therefore urged the UK government to establish a new fund to support the progress toward net-zero manufacturing and energy resilience. This could then power investment in developing and commercialising green technologies like carbon capture and hydrogen that will help UK energy-intensive manufacturers to reduce their emissions.
Dr Clive Hickman OBE, the Chief Executive of the MTC, said:
“This would transform the UK into a net exporter of goods, which has the triple benefit of boosting the UK’s energy resilience, avoiding the need to import these products from countries with poorer environmental records, and making a significant contribution to GDP in the long term.”
