Ahead of the 2021 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, Red Bull Formula 1 drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez toured the headquarters of ExxonMobil, which provides the fuel and lubricant for the Red Bull team.
The Red Bull team has had a successful year, with it vying with the Mercedes team to win the constructor’s trophy for the first time since 2013. Verstappen is also in the running for the Driver’s World Championship, along with Lewis Hamilton, and should he win it at 24 years old, he will become the third-youngest winner after Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton.
Some of the team’s success has been credited to the enhanced Mobil 1 oil and Esso Synergy Race Fuel that has been supplied by ExxonMobil. Speaking to Forbes, Verstappen said about the hook up with US-based oil major:
“The partnership has been really good by always trying to improve every single bit. It’s the same on the car because you’re always trying to improve every area with the fuels and oils. It reduces friction and increases power, which means parts can be cooler and brings you more power as well.”
Perez, who used to have a house close by, said he found it enjoyable to be back in Texas.
High-end racing benefits lubricant developers like Mobil, as it provides a useful platform for developing and testing lubricants under extreme conditions, and some of the subsequent technology can make it into passenger car engine oils that are sold to retail customers.
