Car manufacturing in the UK rose to 69,707 units in February, a year-on-year rise of 13.1%. According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), both domestic and overseas demand has increased.
Most notable is a sharp increase in the output of battery electric, plug-in hybrid and other hybrid vehicles, which made up around 40% of the vehicles rolling off production lines in February, after a 72.2% increase. Production for export and domestic markets rose by 11.5% and 20.3%, respectively. Some 81.2% of vehicles were produced for export, with more than half of these being destined for the European Union.
The supply chain issues that have plagued the industry, particularly for semiconductors, have reportedly eased. Chief Executive of the SMMT, Mike Hawes, said the rise in production indicated that the sector was on the path to recovery thanks to its excellent engineering and high-skill workforce, with it also:
“…embracing new electrified vehicle manufacturing and wide ranging capabilities in the EV supply chain. To take advantage of global opportunities, however, we must scale up at pace and make the UK the most attractive destination for automotive investment by addressing trading and fiscal costs and delivering low carbon, affordable energy.
