UK manufacturing to benefit from new facility

A new facility for research and development, AMRC North West, has been officially opened in Lancashire to help keep the advanced manufacturing sector in the UK at the forefront and to aid businesses in achieving sustainability and productivity goals.

The new facility is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) of Sheffield University. A grant of £20 million from the Growth Deal of the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) funded its construction in Preston’s Samlesbury Aerospace Enterprise Zone.

The Government Minister for Industry, Lee Rowley, opened the centre together with LED Chair Debbie Francis and the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Sheffield, Professor Koen Lamberts. Rowley said that research and development hubs like AMRC North West were exactly what would maintain the leading position of advanced manufacturing in the UK.

Professor Lamberts said it was a great achievement to launch AMRC North West. He added that by delivering translational research to both new and existing industries:

“We can help to boost productivity and attract more investment to Lancashire. The AMRC has a strong 20-year history of working with manufacturers of all sizes to develop greener, more efficient products and processes, and we look forward to working with our partners in Lancashire to support the region’s economic growth.”
