The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) of the University of Sheffield has showcased a fully operational testbed for 5G Standalone (5G SA) technology in the UK for the first time.

In a manufacturing setting, 5G SA presents the opportunity to transform operations by making communication between people, machines and systems more reliable and faster. The AMRC claims to have established a manufacturing resource that is well ahead of anything that has previously existed in the country by combining emerging technologies with expertise in various manufacturing techniques.

Some 75 people from academia, manufacturing and other businesses attended the close-out event for the 5G Factory of the Future (FoF) programme, which was hosted by engineers from the AMRC and partners in the project, to hear about how 5G can really make a difference.

AMRC North West’s head of digital technology and lead on the 5G Factory of the Future project, Aparajithan Sivanathan, said:

“The 5G FoF project has successfully delivered the largest manufacturing testbed in the UK, with 5G standalone capability, proven working 5G use cases and developed native 5G devices. We have also created a business model that will sustain the testbed beyond the end of the project.”

He added that 5G was going to be prominent in the future and that they were currently considering their next steps.
