Wind turbine plant will create jobs

A plant manufacturing the parts for offshore wind turbines is set to open on the Isle of Wight next year, with the Vestas wind energy firm having announced plans for the area.

The Danish company has become an industry leader in wind turbines and is seeking to exploit the growing offshore wind power market in the UK, with a new report backed by both the industry and the UK Government showing that Britain offers the top global location for offshore renewable energy.

This report indicates that opportunities for investment in this sector will hit £21bn in 2020, making it easy to see why Vestas is keen to base a plant in Britain. The firm has selected its research and development facility located close to Newport for the blade building.

Vestas has confirmed that this blade manufacturing is merely the first step in its UK plans, with the benefits for the economy in Britain being potentially as high as £200m.

The chief executive of Vestas, Jens Tommerup, stated that it demonstrated the firm’s commitment to Britain, adding:

“MHI Vestas Offshore Wind will become the first manufacturer with the capacity to serial produce blades for future offshore wind projects in the UK, and we look forward to sharing further aspects of our industrial strategy in due course.”

There will be a knock-on benefit for other industries, with the turbines requiring suitable lubrication to run properly, and UK oil providers able to supply specialist lubricants like Mobil SHC Gear 220, which can cope with the demands of wind turbines.
